What is a watercolour?

Watercolour is a technique in which transparent layers of water-soluble paints are applied to a surface that easily absorbs the paint, usually a piece of paper. Aquarelle is another popular name. The technique is often considered difficult because it requires planning and it is difficult to change during the process. White areas are created by leaving parts of the painting unpainted. Watercolour in various forms has been painted for thousands of years but has gained status as a technique in its own right, particularly in the last century. In the past, watercolour was painted as a cheaper copy of tempera or oil, and was used in preliminary studies. In the book arts, watercolour has often been used for colouring. More recently, watercolour is used for its unique properties. Its fluidity is being explored by many artists and combined with more precise painting to produce detailed paintings with abstract elements where the painting has painted itself.

How can I, as a customer, be sure that I will be satisfied with my watercolour portrait?

At the start of the order, JNArt and the client will reach an agreement on the framework of the project. During this time, the customer has the opportunity to express their expectations. The more JNArt knows about the client's expectations, the easier they are to meet. JNArt then creates the portrait and tries to make it as good as possible. Because JNArt has so much experience with commissions and has mastered the technique, customers are usually satisfied. And if something small needs to be adjusted, a discussion can be held about it. In the end, it is an artistic interpretation that is commissioned and not a photo, so you as the client should seek the artist whose style suits your wishes.

What style does JNArt create watercolour portraits in?

JNArt creates portraits in watercolour in a style similar to those shown on the website. The style varies slightly depending on the level of detail in the portrait. In some cases, it is possible to depart from that style if requested. Please send reference photos or references to other styles or genres.

Price for watercolour painting as a portrait?

The price of a portrait painted using watercolour is between SEK 1500 - 4000 for one person. The cost increases with a higher level of detail, number of people in the picture, detailed attributes or background. Since each portrait has unique conditions, it is best to send an order request to get a more exact picture of the price for your particular painting.

How long does it take to order a watercolour portrait?

The time to order a portrait in oil varies between 2 - 4 weeks depending on the length of the queue. It can be done faster in some cases.

Rich in detail - JNArt creates watercolour portraits in three levels of detail:

Low level of detail

Low detail is seen as a whole from a distance. When the viewer gets close, clear brushstrokes or colour fields are visible. With a low level of detail, it can be a little harder to recognise the person. The focus is instead on capturing a feeling. The painting has mainly flowing elements where the watercolour has been allowed to flow more.

Medium level of detail

Medium detail is an intermediate level where there are both flowing and detailed elements. It is easier to recognise the subject and the characteristics of watercolour painting are still clearly visible.

High level of detail

High level of detail is seen as a whole both from a distance and close up (about half a metre). More time is available to make proportions and colour choices more realistic. Depending on the budget, most of the painting is painted with more detail and fewer abstract or flowing elements.

Who is the watercolour artist carrying out the commission?

Johannes Nygren lives in Majorna, Gothenburg with his wife and children. Over the years, Johannes has created many watercolour portraits of people and animals commissioned by customers all over Sweden. Watercolour has been a technique that the artist has particularly enjoyed. The fact that the paintings have the ability to paint themselves when the watercolour whimsically flows onto the paper is challenging, yet rewarding when it turns out well. Over the years, Johannes has found ways to let the creative watercolour technique come into its own in the form of portraits and other subjects.
