Photo tips for creating a handpainted portrait

Here you will find tips on how to photograph portraits that will work great as a model for a painted or drawn portrait.

Sharpness

You can only create a detailed image if you have a detailed photo to work off of. Don't trim or crop the picture before sending it.

Angle

Different angles give different effects. Choose a picture where the motif looks like themself. A head can sometimes look flat from the front, especially for dog.

The right information

It can be hard to create something which isn't captured in the photo. You can cut and paste certain things, but it costs extra.

Resolution

A motif photographed from a distance often loses sharpness and detail when zoomed in on. Make sure to send clear photos from the start.

Light

Pictures that are too dark or too bright can lose some of the information needed to create a portrait. It's better to take matt photos if they are to be used as a reference.

Good photos for painting/drawing

Sharp, interesting angle, just enough contrasts, the whole face visible in the picture. Make sure the eyes aren't catching a shadow, preferably not more than in the example below. But everything doesn't need to be perfect either, it's possible to create great paintings/drawings even with some complicated pictures.

Photo model for caricatures

References for a caricature don't need to be as high quality as pictures for portraits. However, pictures where the motif is smiling are advantageous. Send multiple photographs so JNArt can choose the ones that work the best and also get a better understanding of the characteristics if the pictures show different angles. Pictures with attributes you want included in the portrait are, of course, also important.
